Patient Advocates

SABCS welcomes attendance by patient advocates representing patient advocacy, education, and survivor support organizations. In addition to the scientific sessions, patient advocates are encouraged to attend educational programming hosted by the Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation (ABCF) and network with colleagues in the SABCS Patient Advocate Lounge.

More information, including how to register for the Alamo Advocate Program, can be found below.

Registration Category & Fees

The patient advocate registration category for SABCS is reserved exclusively for patient advocates and is not intended for medical and scientific professionals. Individuals interested in registering under this category either work or volunteer for national not-for-profit patient advocacy organizations that demonstrate a charitable mission, engage in patient advocacy activities, and supports programs, activities, or services that benefit patients with cancer.

A discounted patient advocate registration rate is available for qualifying patient advocates. During the registration process patient advocates must upload an attestation or letter confirming their role as a patient advocate. Please include a brief overview of your organization and a detailed description of your current and past cancer-related patient advocacy work, as well as your patient advocacy priorities and plans for the future.  Individuals registered under this category are not eligible to receive continuing education credit for their attendance.

SABCS is pleased to provide patient advocate registration scholarships for complimentary registration to SABCS. Applicants must submit a patient advocate registration scholarship form to be considered for the scholarship. Scholarships are based on need and will be awarded on a rolling basis. Applications must be submitted at least three weeks before the start of the conference. Organizations are limited to two patient advocate registration scholarships per year. Scholarships are non-transferable.

Alamo Advocate Program

Every year, ABCF sponsors a host of special mentoring and education sessions for patient advocates attending SABCS or participating virtually.

In the Hot Topics Mentoring Sessions, leading experts in the field of breast cancer provide commentary on symposium presentations and respond to advocates’ questions about the relevance of this scientific data. Daily Educational Programs provide additional advocate-focused scientific information. All programming is available on-site and online for virtual registrants and then archived for view on the ABCF YouTube channel.

Please note, registration for the ABCF Patient Advocate Program is separate from SABCS.

27 Years of Advocate Focus

The administration of the Alamo Advocate Program is handled entirely by ABCF. In addition to the free onsite and virtual programming, ABCF awards a limited number of travel grants to patient advocates attending SABCS. Scholars are required to complete preparatory study, attend designated SABCS and AAP sessions, work with a patient advocate mentor, and prepare a paper on a topic covered at the meeting, for distribution to advocates in their home organization and by ABCF.

Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation

ABCF is a non-profit 501[c]3 organization focused on grassroots advocacy, education, and support. Formed in 1992, ABCF’s mission is to end breast cancer by assisting patients, informing policymakers and expanding knowledge through education and community outreach.

The 1st Annual Advocate Program was held in 1997, in conjunction with the 21st Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. From inception, the program has been specially designed to address the needs of patient advocates and those who support them.  Each year travel grants are awarded to a select group of international and national scholars to attend SABCS. ABCF also sponsors mentoring and educational sessions discussed above, which are open to all SABCS registrants and available virtually during the conference and then on the ABCF YouTube channel.
